Below are descriptions of the classes I completed as part of the Masters of Arts in Education program at Michigan State University.
Spring 2015
Being able to take into account the way a student learns is a must for a teacher. During this course, I gained great insight into teaching English literacy to English Language Learners (ELLs). This course was invaluable because it helped me understand different components of literacy such as comprehension, fluency, and assessment. The final project for the course had me working with an ELL to improve his literacy. I aided my student's growth as an ELL with personalized lesson plans that targeted his weaknesses while also taking into account his learning style.
Summer 2015
Inquiry gives the teacher an opportunity to think and write about essential questions of education. This course took me through different domains of educational inquiry such as participant observation in other cultures, philosophical thought of education, practitioner inquiry, and the impact of technology on education. This course encouraged me to be a reflective practitioner of education who tries to understand the nature of learning, teaching, and leadership from various perspectives.

The purpose of book awards are to inform people of good works of literature. And although many award winning books and classics may deserve merit, I learned that criteria used to determine book award winners and classics can be broad and it is important for a reader to be critical of a book that has been given an award or is considered a classic. Also, through the awards I learned of books that featured different cultures which I can use in a multicultural classroom.

Fall 2015
Being a coach of competitive sports is about more than knowing the sport and strategies that go with the sport. This course surveyed and applied the philosophical, ethical, and psychosocial principles of coaching competitive sports for athletes of different ages and abilities. I learned how the psychological aspect of coaching is similar to that of teaching in the classroom. One of the projects for this class had me working with a student on setting goals she could work toward.

It's important for a teacher to understand the needs of a student who is learning English as a second language. During this course, I learned how to develop language skills and literacy for ELLs. For the case study project, I worked with an ELL to improve his English language skills and literacy while also taking into account my student's different cultural values to aide in instruction.

Spring 2016
Classroom management is a fundamental skill a teacher needs to have to effectively lead his or her classroom. This course focused on teaching students with challenging behaviors such as aggressiveness, hostility, and passive-aggressiveness to name a few. The course taught me approaches on how to manage behaviors of myself and student. The culminating project for this course was a case study on a student with challenging behavior in my classroom. For the case study I collected and analyzed data of my student, created an intervention, and assessed the effectiveness of the intervention.

Due to the increasing litigious area of athletics, knowledge of some aspects of the law, the ability to assess risk and management of risk, and the foresight to protect participants and attendees become valuable tools in promoting the goals and success of the coach and/or administrator. This course prepared me to consider the responsibilities associated with providing and maintaining an educationally sound athletic programs for student-athletes. For this course I analyzed moot court cases and drafted documents an administrators would create such as a anti-hazing policy, a risk management plan, and Title IX compliance.

Reflective teachers are usually looking for ways to integrate reading, writing, thinking and reasoning into their respective content areas. In this course, I studied how to teach literacy in my content area using strategies to make me more effective as a teacher. I learned how a focus on student inquiry might drive my classroom's literacy work. For the final project in this course, I created a unit plan using student inquiry to explore one's identity.
Fall 2016
An online presence allows for others to get a glimpse of a person without actually having met the person. During this course, I created an online portfolio of my teaching journey through my Masters of Arts in Education program. My online portfolio displays my future learning goals, a showcase of my work, and work experience.

Teaching and learning are lifelong projects that are constantly changing and improving. TE 865 focuses on the purposes for teaching and learning social studies. I am currently learning how to develop the citizenship and social science reasoning of my students. During the course I've been challenged to develop my teaching pedagogy to include the teaching of social justice as well as teaching history through multiple perspectives.
